07 Feb UNV Uganda Celebrated 2016 International Volunteer Day
The UN Volunteers Programme in Uganda celebrated the IVD 2016 jointly with 9 key partners; The Government of Uganda, UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Volunteer Involving Organizations, Uganda Development Cooperation (UDC), Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), Management Training and Advisory Center (MTAC) and Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA).
This was in line with #SDG17 on Partnerships and #SDG9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure. Therefore, the UNVs in Uganda joined by the UN, Government of Uganda, Private Sector and Civil Society for the IVD celebrations to illuminate the power of partnership in promoting Volunteerism and implement the SDGs.
The day began with a march, led by a brass band, from Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) grounds east of Kampala to the UIRI headquarters, approximately 3kilometres away. At UIRI, The UNV Programme Officer, Mr. Christian Mwamanga, Mr. Bruno Otto, the UNIDO Country Representative, Prof Charles Kwesiga, the Executive Director of UIRI, Trade and Industry Minister Amelia Kyambadde planted a tree symbolizing the importance of partnership #SDG17 in implementing the SDGs, Value of Volunteerism in realizing the SDGs, #Global Applause, and Sustainability.
